Qui di seguito, il testo integrale della Preghiera della serenità di Reinhold Niebuhr, inserita in forma scritta in un sermone del 1943, ma già utilizzata diversi anni prima in forma orale:

 

Dio,
donaci la grazia di accettare con serenità

le cose che non possono essere cambiate,
il coraggio di cambiare

le cose che devono essere cambiate,
e la saggezza di distinguere

le une dalle altre.

Concedici di vivere un giorno per volta,
di assaporare un momento per volta,
di accettare le difficoltà come un sentiero verso la pace,
accogliendo, come ha fatto Gesù,
questo mondo di peccato così com'è,

e non come lo vorrei;
confidando che Tu volgerai tutto per il meglio
se mi arrenderò alla Tua volontà,
così che io possa essere ragionevolmente felice in questa vita
e sommamente felice con Te per sempre nella prossima.

God,

give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
